If you’ve just discovered the world of yoga, you are in for a delightful surprise. Yoga is a fantastic practice, uniting strength, flexibility, mindfulness, and health. It’s the perfect workout and lifestyle for expert yogis and beginner yoga practitioners alike. However, practicing yoga the right way takes, well, practice. That’s why, today, we’re taking a moment to offer up a few tips that beginner yoga practitioners can utilize to make the most out of their early yoga days!
Yoga integrates stretching with strength. As practitioners move from pose to pose, they hold various positions, working out muscle groups while stretching the muscles. Now, beginners are often tempted to overstretch, especially in a group setting. Beginners all too often strive to stretch to positions that advanced yoga practitioners can attain. Overstretching can actually tear ligaments and muscles. Instead, stretch to a comfortable position, hold it, and breathe. Simply stretch until you feel your muscle stretching—there shouldn’t be any pain. If you feel pain in your joints, reduce your stretch.
Yoga is best paired with a great diet. If you’re practicing yoga to shape your body and improve your health, a nutritional diet will double your results. Be sure to eat plenty of protein, and include lots of fruits and veggies in your diet (they’re packed with the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to thrive). Don’t eat right before a yoga session, your stomach may get upset.
Remember, yoga isn’t just about physical actions, it’s also about mindfulness. Be mindful of how you feel before, during, and after a session. Focus on how your body feels. Release your mind of all the stressors of your day-to-day. Meditate. Enjoy your yoga session, and be mindful of all of the benefits it provides.
