Some people make fun of yoga- saying it is not a real workout because there is not a high level of cardio or muscle strengthening exercises. But if you have ever tried yoga, you will know how physically challenging it can actually be.
Different yoga poses work your core, strengthening your muscles and improving your balance. Yoga is not only good for your body, but also your mind through meditation and focusing on awareness.
The truth is, yoga is a great workout, in more ways than one. It works multiple groups of muscles at once, while involving the core for balance. Yoga does in fact count as cardio- doing a flow of different poses with fluidity at a good pace, while matching the movements to your breathing is more of a workout than you may think.
But yoga is supposed to be relaxing. At least that is what most people think, and they are right, for the most part.There are different types of yoga, some are slower and more relaxing, while others are speedy and involve more movement.
Yin yoga is a slower paced, more passive yoga. During this style of yoga, postures (aka asanas) are held for long periods of time, sometimes for several minutes. It is meant to stretch tendons and ligaments, while releases tension from the body. In yin yoga, you are relaxing the posture and softening the muscle. The time spent holding these postures is often used as a time for meditation.
Yang yoga is the opposite of yin yoga, as it is a more active yoga. It works on muscular strength, stamina, and flexibility. There are subcategories of yang yoga. This includes: ashtanga, vinyasa, hatha, and many more.
These various types of yoga are more fast paced, matching breathing to the flow of different postures. This type of yoga is more of a cardio workout than a relaxing workout, like yin.
This is obviously the mix of the two different styles of yoga, yin and yang. These types of yoga classes generally start with the slow meditative yin yoga and transition into the more intense yang yoga.
