One of the more traditional form of yoga practiced in urban culture, Ashtanga Yoga is considered the core or heart of yoga. Translated, it literally means eight arms. In yoga, there are eight aspects that have to do with awareness of self in body and physical being, breath, and relationship to others and the divine. While the traditional practice, Ashtanga Yoga, is structured to a lifestyle practice, thus taking large amounts of time. However, it has been modified to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga for a class setting and into a set of prescribed movements and postures, or Asana. The practice of proper breath or Pranayama is important to reach the full benefits of Ashtanga Yoga.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga, full of movement rather than static. The Vinyasa style of yoga moves from one pose to another with breath, therefore, it complements the Ashtanga perfectly, moving through Asana with dynamic movement and the use of breath and mindfulness.

The benefits of Ashtanga Yoga are for the mind, body and spirit. The practice on a regular basis will help with mindfulness and being present in the moment. As will all forms of yoga, the physical act of Asana can be performed separate from bringing one’s whole self into the practice. However, for full benefit, the mind and spirit are part of the practice of yoga, leaving everything behind and being in the moment. For the body, yoga aids in flexibility and breath, but it also increases the function of the immune system.
